In Sergei Bondarchuk’s epic “War and Peace” (1967) thousands of people dressed in historical costumes came together to reconstruct the grandeur of Napoleon’s invasion to Russia.

One day, LIFE magazine correspondent came on set and took pictures.

Yes, that’s Red Square, Moscow in 1962 1812.

That’s where we all get a bit scared of how real history may be.
